upcycle old t-shirts for a final Ignite project

For a final Ignite project, we are required to take an action and raise awareness of environmental issues. For this project, we have decided to raise awareness for environmental issues caused by plastic bags. Plastic bags can be harmful when thrown into the ocean, and it can cause many deaths to sea life each year. Hence, we decided to upcycle old t-shirts into reusable bags to minimize the amount of plastic used each year. We would love for you guys to donate some unwanted t-shirts for our project. Please drop these t-shirts off before June 5th outside the MS/HS Cafeteria. There will be a box along with a sign above. Thank you for helping us to raise awareness!

Waste x 0

Recycling 1 ton of paper saves 17 trees, 7,000 gallons of water, 463 gallons of oil, 3 cubic yards of landfill space, and saves enough energy to heat an average home for six months. A group of FA8 students have talked to Sodexho and have implemented a new recycling system for ISB. There will be new green buckets in certain places around the school that are for plastics and aluminium products. Some things that CAN'T be recycled in these buckets are things like plastic bottle caps, paper juice boxes, or anything contaminated with food. The buckets will be placed near:

-The main entrance of the cafeteria

-The tray return part of the cafeteria

-The back entrance of the cafeteria

-The main entrance (the ES entrance)

-The high school entrances

-The upper gallery

-By the glass box {6th-grade hallway glass box}

-3129

-3404

-The entrance for gym 1 & gym 2 (by the printer)

Make the easy and good choice to put your plastics and aluminium products in here so you don't contribute to global denigration.

Departing Students Laptop Return (Grades 9 - 11)

Laptops for students leaving ISB will be collected at 2:45 on Monday, June 12th outside the EdTech Office (room 2413). They may be returned to the EdTech Office before that date if you no longer need it for your school work.

You need to return your MacBook, power supply (including the two-prong adapter) and the power extension cord.

3 Common Window Treatment Problems and Their Solutions

Finding the perfect window treatment is important because it should complement your décor and furniture at home. Below, you’ll find three of the most common window treatment problems and their solutions to help you achieve the window treatment look you’re aiming for.

Light leaks and gaps in window treatments
Windows vary considerably in width and height, not to mention all the other details that will impact the fit, such as trim, molding and sill depth. If you’re experiencing significant light leaks and large gaps, then it’s possible your window treatment is the wrong size for the space or the product wasn’t installed in the window frame correctly.
Choosing a custom solution that includes professional measuring ensures your window covering will be fabricated to your exact window specifications. When combined with professional installation, this guarantees your new blinds, shades, shutters or drapery will fit perfectly and function as intended. Source: AngiesList

Not getting the length right
The length of curtains is pretty vital to a room. Too short, and it’ll look like you didn’t buy them long enough. Many will say long enough that they hover just above your floor; this will allow the look of length but without the dirt dragging possibilities. But those who want a really formal, lux look might consider too-long curtains that pool at the ground. Source: ApartmentTherapy

Problem: Lack of privacy outside.
If you’re lucky enough to have a porch, back deck, or balcony, you probably love spending time out there. While you love the extra space, you probably don’t love the wandering eyes of your neighbours.

Solution: Hang curtains outside.
Put up curtains outside to give some space and privacy between you and your neighbours. Not only does adding curtains outside create privacy, it also transforms the outdoor space into another living space. Bonus room without the reno. Source: Blog.HomeStars

3 Tips to Maximize Bathroom Space

Content originally published and Shared from http://perfectbath.com

Clutter can easily make a room look smaller. But if you already have a small bathroom to begin with, keeping things organized may not be enough to make the space look easy on the eyes. To make a bathroom look bigger, maximize the space by following these tips:

Open Up Floor Space
If you have alternative storage or a linen closet, replace the vanity cabinet with a pedestal or wall-mount sink. While the additional floor space won’t exactly be usable, it will trick the eye into believing the room is larger. Source: DIYNetwork

Use Glass
Get rid of the shower curtain or frosted-glass shower doors and replace them with clear glass. It will open up the shower area, making it a part of the entire room and giving the appearance of more space. Source: DIYNetwork

Trick the Eye
Various visual effects give the illusion of more space in your bathroom than actually exists. A well-placed mirror reflects light and adds depth to a room. Hang one large mirror in the bathroom, positioning it so it’s one of the first things you see when you walk in the door. Or add a decorative eye-catching focal point such as a painting, sculpture or plant. Having something attractive for the eye to fall on takes the focus off of the fact that the space is small.
Painting in light, neutral tones also helps open up the room, as does using multiple shades of the same light paint color. Opt for paint colors like beige, cream, taupe and off-white, as well as muted blue, gray, yellow, pink and blue. If you want bright complementary colors, introduce them through accessories like towels and soap dispensers. Source: Learn.CompactAppliance

Blogging started out as a mere hobby, an online journal where individuals would share their thoughts, feelings, experiences and opinions. However, businesses have found that blogging is also a valuable resource for lead generation, customer service, boosting search engine rankings, and brand [...]

3 Tips on Choosing Kitchen Curtains

The kitchen may not be the most important room in the house, but you do spend a lot of time in it. And, we know the best food is made with love, so it’s a given that you should feel comfortable in your kitchen. When it comes to your kitchen’s curtains, here are some tips that might help you choose the best curtains that perfectly fit your kitchen style.

Curtain Fabric
There are many kinds of fabric available for kitchen curtains from those made of heavy materials, to those made of lightweight fibers. Brocades and other heavier fabrics are usually not recommended as they obstruct air and light. The most recommended fabric for kitchen curtains is cotton because it is a durable but lightweight fabric that is easy to wash, and is thus ideal to the demands of kitchen action.
There are fabrics that have cute printed or embroidered designs that could definitely add to the aesthetic value of the curtains. It is however important to check if the fabric is light resistant so that it would not easily fade or turn yellow over time. Some kitchen curtains are quite thin and might need to have linings. Most fabrics are sold pre-shrunk so that their shapes would not be altered, however, if you are making your own curtain, you might need to make some allowance for shrinkage. Source: StreetDirectory

Curtain Color
If your kitchen already has a theme and/or color, you should take care to seamlessly integrate the curtains. Match them to the tiles (including wall tiles), counters, furniture, etc.
If you have tiles of neutral colors, you should keep this neutrality with your curtains. Focus your choice towards beige, white or pastel colors.
If you can, select a range of color samples that you like and check if they match the rest of your kitchen. Source: GroomedHome

Curtain Style
Curtain styles in the kitchen are country, contemporary and casual and like color we generally have a theme in our home and most of us keep to that theme.
For many a country style kitchen is popular since it incorporates earth tones that make the kitchen a warm and comfortable place to spend time in. There are literally 1000’s of country style curtains to choose from. Toile, Battenburg and lace curtains are just a few.
For many of the urban dwellers living in cities contemporary curtains/valances is the perfect choice. These types of curtains generally have straight lines without a lot of texture and are solid in color some have vertical or horizontal lines on them. Source: HelpfulKitchenTips

3 Tips on How to Design a Bathroom

Content originally published and Shared from http://perfectbath.com

A bathroom remodel can make a huge impact on your home’s comfort level. In this short post we’ll cover some tips on how to design your bathroom. Read on!

Consider Layouts
A two-wall layout gives you more flexibility. The sink and toilet can be plumbed on one wall and the tub and shower on the other. The three-wall layout is the most versatile and also the most complicated and expensive. Working with a certified bathroom designer or architect can help you avoid costly mistakes and make the best use of space. Source: BHG

Assess Costs
Get tips for creating and managing your remodeling budget. Break down renovation costs and discover budget-friendly options.

  • Creating a Budget
  • Where to Splurge and Save
  • Cheap vs. Steep
  • Expenses to Expect
  • Remodeling for Resale Source: HGTV

Fixtures and Components
The easiest sinks to install are those which hang from the wall. Vanity sinks look great if you have the space and budget. Other things to consider are whether you want the sink to be self-rimming or rimless and flush or framed. Don’t forget that a small storage cabinet is a great feature for linens and cleaning supplies.
Most toilets are comprised of 2 pieces, which are the tank and the bowl, but you can also install a single piece toilet. You also must choose between a reverse trap toilet and a siphon-jet toilet, the latter is the more efficient flushing system. Source: DoItYourself

3 Tips to Make Your Windows Look Larger

If you have small windows and you want larger ones, but can’t afford to have them renovated, then this article is for you. Here are some tips to make your windows look larger using only window treatments.

Fabric selection
To make a short window look taller, make curtains and draperies from printed fabric with a vertically inclined pattern. Vertical patterns include more than just stripes; you can use any pattern that draws your eye up and down rather than side to side. To make tall, narrow windows look wider, choose a horizontal pattern that draws your eye across instead of up. If you want to create the illusion of both height and width, opt for a vertically inclined pattern, or use a solid or random print. You can use placement tricks to create the illusion of width. Make valances, shades, cornice boards and lambrequins from your curtain or drapery fabric, or choose a coordinating solid, random pattern or nondirectional mini-prints for a contrasting look. Source: Homeguides.SFGate

Layer curtains and shades
The same way a curtain rods can help you fudge on width, window shades can help exaggerate height. “Hang those shades right under the rod for the appearance of taller windows,” says Berry. Plus, this treatment has a very high-end look to it. Source: HouseBeautiful

Anchor the rod 8 to 12 inches outside the frame
Many people make the mistake of placing the curtain rod directly on the outside of the window frame. But anchoring the rod eight to12 inches outside the frame on each side, will make the window appear much larger. Plus, when the curtains are open, they won’t block any part of the window — instead, they’ll only block the wall. That means you’ll get much more light flooding into the room. Source: Zillow

3 Benefits of a Whirlpool Bathtub

Content originally published and Shared from http://perfectbath.com

After a long and tiring day, all we want is to rest and have a relaxing time at home. To heighten the experience, a warm bath in a whirlpool tub can take the stress of the day out of your system. Aside from that, there are more benefits a whirlpool bathtub can provide. To learn more about it, continue reading below:

Better Circulation
The combination of warm water and massage jets in a whirlpool promote better blood circulation. They help your blood vessels dilate, or open up, allowing more oxygen and nutrients to flow to major organs. This is particularly beneficial to those who have arthritis. Improved circulation can encourage better movement and less pain and stiffness in your joints. Source: LiveStrong

Clearer Skin
The hot water bath of lapping water increases your normal body temperature. This rise in body temperature makes your blood vessels dialate. This improves the blood circulation in your body. When your blood circulation is good, your skin remains clear and you do not get dark patches and pimples. Source: BoldSky

Enhanced Physical Buoyancy
When you spend a lot of time in a bath, you will know how it feels to be super buoyant, as the water in the bath will support a good portion of your body weight. But in whirlpool baths, you will feel even more physically buoyant, as the whirlpool bath’s water can carry about 90% of your own weight. So, you may ask, what is the importance of this? Well, it is important for the simple reason that this buoyancy helps relieve the stress, strain, and weight on your muscles and joints. Your body’s other joints will benefit from less weight as well – your elbows, knees, and even wrists. Source: StyleMotivation

A whirlpool bathtub may be more expensive than a traditional one, but for all the said benefits above, it sure is worth it. For top-of-the-line whirlpool bathtub choices, contact us!

3 Things to Consider When Installing Window Treatments

A wide variety of window coverings can improve lighting, privacy and efficiency in your home while enhancing or changing the design of an entire room. Here are 3 things to consider when installing window treatments.

Number & Size of Windows
Clearly the number of windows that need treatments installed affects the price of installation. However, like most home improvement jobs, there are some cost savings associated with increased volume because the workers and their tools are already on site. Therefore, while the installation of a single custom window covering costs on average $60-$70, the price to install two is less than double that, around $80. The price for three or more is similarly discounted, ranging from about $100 for three to about $120 for five window treatment installations.  Source: HomeAdvisor

Material and Quality
Whether you’re looking to add some serious designer cred to the look of your home, or you’re dead set about stopping pesky sunlight from bothering you on a weekend morning, the kind of material you choose can significantly affect your price.
For instance, window blinds, shades, and shutters can be made from plastic, vinyl, metal, hardwood, faux wood, bamboo, and even fabric. Hardwood is among the most expensive material while vinyl is among the least. Lower-end materials can cost as little as $20 per panel while high-end materials can be a little more.
But quality of window treatments doesn’t just have to do with the material itself. The quality is also affected by who has designed and manufactured the treatments. A set of custom-made blinds made from hardwood, specifically intended to be eco-friendly and hand-crafted by a leading designer will cost you much more than a mass-produced vinyl blind. Whether or not these differences in price — which can be hundreds, if not thousands of dollars — are worth it to you depend on how you plan on using the treatments, the ease or difficulty of fitting blinds to your unique windows, and how much value you put in design and decor. Source: SomfySystems

Types

  • Curtains or Drapes: You have several choices in what you can use to cover your windows. Drapes and curtains come in a variety of shades, designs, lengths and textures. It would be very easy to find drapes and curtains that went well with your room’s motif. Some curtains also have unique features that block the sun. Curtains can be as transparent as you wish. For the “greenest” option, blackout curtains are available. These curtains completely block out the sun’s heat and light from your room, saving on unnecessary cooling costs. To get best results with blackout curtains, have a professional measure the area to be covered. Many people opt for another window treatment such as blinds or a shade underneath the curtains.
  • Blinds: Blinds are another option you may choose. They may come with horizontal slats or vertical slats. Most of them have a pull cord that opens the slats when twisted and opens the entire blind when pulled. When you are considering which blinds to buy, remember, ones that are of lower quality usually don’t hold up as well as custom blinds. Flimsy blind slats will twist, tear off and stain. Many companies sell blinds of a much higher quality that look great for years. A home improvement professional will measure your window and install blinds that fit perfectly for your unique window. Try window blinds that are made of wood for a dramatic effect.
  • Shades: Other types of blinds are often referred to as shades. The roll-up shade rolls up to close similar to a scroll. The Roman shade has become more popular lately. This shade folds up onto itself to close. It is possible to hire a professional to make and install your fabric shades. When choosing your fabric for the Roman shade, remember that it is okay for window treatments to be your accent color rather than the dominant colors of the room. Source:  ImproveNet

Bathroom Safety for the Elderly: 4 Tips to Prevent Injuries

Content originally published and Shared from http://perfectbath.com

Injury-proofing your elderly loved one’s bathroom is very important.  You  should consider a few basic measures to make the bathroom a safer place. Here are 4 tips to help your loved one avoid bathroom injuries:

Bathtubs and Showers
Most homes in America have bathtubs that are not accessible. This presents a very big safety issue for people who wish to age in place. For a standard tub there are several things you can do to make it safer for an elderly person. Installing grab bars, shower seats and applying an anti-slip coating to the tub floor are three reasonably priced options. Bathtubs also can be modified to create a safer way to enter the tub, which may be more inexpensive than replacing the tub. There are also a wide variety of walk-in tubs on the market that can replace your existing tub.
For showers, the most accessible option is a roll-in shower. This is a shower stall that has an curb-less entrance and the door (or opening) is a minimum of 36 inches wide. This would allow access for a wheelchair at some point and gives those who walk into the shower plenty of room to maneuver. Source: AgeInPlace

Install Grab Bars
Many elders use towel bars or shower/tub features to hold onto while climbing in and out of the shower/tub. Towel bars are good for holding towels but aren’t built to support weight. Instead, install grab bars in easy-to-reach places to help support balance when entering and exiting the shower or tub.
Grab bars are best suited for elders with good upper-body strength who are able to hold onto grab bars while moving or standing. All grab bars should be slip-resistant (‘grip’ surface bars are better than those bars with high gloss finish), color contrasted from the wall for visibility, and securely fixed to the studs of the wall for adequate support (“bolted on” bars are preferable to suction cup bars, which could easily slip away when body weight is applied). Keep a Medical Alert Button
Most slips and falls occur in the bathroom. Keeping an extra medical alert button near the toilet is a smart idea so they can summon help right away. The Emergency Wall Communicator option for our HOME & YARD Medical Alert Systems is designed with this in mind. Source: MedicalCareAlert

Raise the Height of the Toilet
Simply raising the toilet’s height as little as three inches can make all the difference for seniors. There are a lot of options for raising the height of the toilet. You can simply raise the height of your existing toilet with a thick toilet seat, or you can replace your old toilet with a “Comfort Height” toilet. Once again, this can be a DIY project, or a project where you call a plumber. Source: TheSeniorList

When it comes to bathroom safety, you and your loved one cannot afford to cut any corners. A safe bathroom will give you the peace of mind that your loved one can go to the bathroom or bath with a significantly lowered risk of injury. For more information, contact us now!
