With less than a month until the start of the Premier League season, fans across the globe will be excited ahead of the feast of football on show- and Manchester United could be one of the most exciting sides in the division.
Jose Mourinho has taken charge of the Red Devils and has already made three excellent signings that make his potential starting line-up for the 2016/17 Premier League season a treat for the eyes…
The Portuguese boss is known for his robust tactics that shut out the opposition, making the back four crucially important, but Mourinho’s sides have always held a strong attack and it will be no different at Old Trafford.
David De Gea will certainly be the man between the sticks and United can thank their lucky stars that Real Madrid decided against returning for the player this summer. In front of him, the back four will undergo some changes.
Matteo Darmian could be on the way out but, currently, he’s a shoe-in to start on the right side of defence, although Mourinho will demand improvements. In the middle, a new partnership will see £30m Eric Bailly and veteran Chris Smalling combine with the aim of providing an impenetrable attack. Finally, Luke Shaw, who spent the majority of last season injured, will return to the frame.
That back-line won’t venture too far forward, except for set-pieces, so Shaw and Darmian will both have to cope with increased defensive responsibilities.
Mourinho’s midfield may find it difficult to strike a balance but the trio we’ve chosen provide a mixture of creativity, defensive strengths and pace. Michael Carrick will be the deepest of the trio, sat in front of the back four, behind captain Wayne Rooney.
Having performed well for England in a midfield role, it’s expected the club captain will adopt this role for United; especially given improvements to the attack that mean there may not be a place up-top for the veteran.
Completing the midfield is Memphis Depay, who may just thrive under Mourinho like Eden Hazard did during Chelsea’s title winning campaign despite the fact he failed to impress properly during his debut season at Old Trafford- but he’ll know Jesse Lingard is ready to step-up, if necessary.
Finally, a fierce attacking trio sees young superstar in the making Anthony Martial threaten from the left, with Henrikh Mkhitaryan, an assist king who managed X assists in the Bundesliga last season, providing a different threat from the right. The central figure is of course Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who will be keen to impress in England having scored a record-breaking X goals during his time with Paris Saint-Germain.
With options on the bench like teenage sensation Marcus Rashford, Spanish international Ander Herrera and the exciting Timothy Fosu-Mensah, Mourinho certainly has a squad at his disposal that can challenge for the Premier League title.
