Arsenal 2016/17 Tactics: Gunners Going For Glory

After a disappointing campaign last term, which resulted in a surprise exit in the FA Cup at the hands of Watford and a Premier League title push that fell apart, Arsenal will be looking for success this season but it will prove difficult due to the added wealth of competition from rival clubs this term.

With Manchester United and Manchester City splashing the cash, and both under new guidance, Arsene Wenger has to prove himself once again at a time when he has less than a year left on his contract. However, the Frenchman has retained his consistency throughout his twenty years in charge at north London and he’s often achieved more than expected with an under-par squad.

It’s likely that Arsenal will invest into their squad before the close of the transfer window but for now, this is the strongest side that Arsenal can field.

Arsenal-Formation

At the back, it’s set to be an unchanged line-up for Arsenal until the deal for Shkodran Mustafi is complete. Petr Cech will command the sticks behind Per Mertesacker, who is injured until 2017, and Laurent Koscielny. The French defender will be crucial to the Gunners aims this season, whilst Nacho Monreal and Hector Bellerin will support the attack from the wide areas.

With flying full-backs and a squad full of adventurous players, the midfield duo of Granit Xhaka and Mohamed Elneny will be crucial to providing added protection to the back-line. Both are also controlled and tidy in possession, so they will also be required to provide the link between defence and attack.

From their, the attacking midfielders will provide a wealth of pace. Alexis Sanchez on the left will be one of Arsenal’s key-players this season after a mixed campaign last season, whilst Mesut Ozil will want to replicate his fine performances. Theo Walcott, now 27, will need to find consistency and a natural playing position, with it unlikely he will be called upon regularly up front.

Arsenal-Tactics

Up front, Olivier Giroud is currently the only real option Arsenal have and many expect the Gunners will improve this area of the squad before the end of the month. However, Giroud will still be a crucial player as Arsene Wenger will undoubtably rotate things throughout the season.

With the likes of Jack Wilshere, Aaron Ramsey, Gabriel Paulista, Santi Cazorla and Danny Welbeck also in the squad, as well as young talents like Calum Chambers and Alex Iwobi, it’s clear Arsenal do have a strong side capable of competing but they will need to quickly iron out their flaws after a disappointing opening day defeat at the hands of Liverpool.
