Accounting SEO: Local Search Optimization You Need to Know

Just like traditional businesses, accountants and CPAs have many options available for promoting and growing their service revenue. One of the most vital options is search engine optimization or SEO for short. I might be just a little bit biased since I've been working with SEO for fifteen years. But I am with good reason. [...]

Bathroom Safety Tips to Keep in Mind

Bathroom Safety Tips

Your bathroom is a workhorse in the house and it’s also a space where we can retreat for a relaxing spa-like session in the evening.  It can be one of the only quiet spaces in a household with few people!  It’s also a place where, for a variety of reasons, safety might be an issue.  It pays to be aware of hazards in your bathroom and how to prevent injuries.

  1. Keep electrical grooming tools away from water. This is a big one, and we often see it ridiculed in comedies, but electrocution is no laughing matter.  Don’t use your hairdryer, electric razors, or other styling tools anywhere where there’s a chance you’ll drop them in water and find yourself at risk for a shock.bathroom-safety-precautions
  2. Make sure that bath mats are secure against the floor. Bath mats are wonderful to step out onto after you’ve showered or bathed, but they can also offer a slipping or tripping hazard.  The best mats have a rubberized bottom so that they won’t slip and end in a bad fall.
  3. While showering you’ve no doubt noticed that the tub can become very slippery. A great idea is to invest in a rubberized anti-slip mat for inside the tub.  Some of them even come with suction cups on the bottom.  You can either leave it in place if everyone showers, or drape it over the tub to dry if there’s a chance someone will be having a bath instead.
  4. Wall handles on the tub are also a great idea, especially if your household incorporates little ones or seniors. This can help not only to prevent a slip but also to help people with limited mobility in and out of the bathtub.  In serious cases of limited mobility, it’s also a great idea to have a handle installed by the toilet.
  5. It’s not nice to think about anyone walking in on you when you’re using the bathroom, and most of them have locks on the doors. If you have children, however, you might want to rethink this when they’re small – especially before they’re school aged.  A small child can get into a lot of trouble behind a locked door and they might not be aware of how to unlock it.
  6. Keep sharp objects tucked away in a high, safe location. This can include razors, nail clippers, or tweezers.  It’s best to keep these objects hidden from sight from young children who may hurt themselves trying to use them.
  7. Keep your light bulbs changed. There are so many obstacles and hard surfaces in a bathroom that a fall can become disastrous.  Lighting is key, so you’ll want to ensure that burnt out bulbs are replaced quickly, and that the lighting you have is in a good location to light up any potential hazards.

The inevitable, of course, happens no matter how safety conscious we are. However, with a little foresight and a keen eye for potential hazards, your bathroom can be made a lot safer.

1.

Please provide a brief statement of interest as to why you want to run for the Board.

I’m the head of the Beijing office and Managing Director at a European investment bank. I’m also the career mentor for graduate students at Tsinghua University and Renmin University. My strength in strategy and communications has helped many organizations solve complex problems. The world is changing rapidly, with new technologies emerging and new events affecting international relations almost constantly. How do we help ISB better prepare our children to face the challenges and opportunities? Can we do more to build a culture for excellence, improve the curriculum and support the teachers, and give our children a head-start compared to their peers? I believe the board needs to update our strategy to address these pressing issues, and can work better with the community to implement the solutions. Moreover, I want to promote better communications among all stakeholders of ISB, including the leadership, teaching staff and parents. Only through communication can we align our interests and efforts to pursue the best path forward. Our governance structure and community culture demand a stronger partnership between the school and the parents. If elected, I will be a facilitator and advocate for this partnership.

2.

In what ways have you supported ISB and/or other schools your children have attended?

As a firm believer in the power of communications, I have organized regular dialogues with the new Head of School to discuss the school’s strategic and operational priorities. For these meetings, we made special effort to include a diverse group of parents representing various cultural and professional backgrounds, as well as the grade-levels of their children attending ISB. Such meetings have proven to be constructive and we generated several ideas to strengthen the community partnership. Working closely with homeroom parents and PTA members, I have volunteered for many school activities, including International Day (China and North America team) and Spring Fair. As a finance and economic professional, I gave talks to ISB students on career development and world economy. For example last year I presented “International Finance and World Economic Order” to students ranging from G3 – G9, with a focus on the European Union. This year, I also volunteered for Future’s Academy to be a mentor for the entrepreneurship project.

3.

How will your skills and prior experience (volunteer or paid) benefit the Board of Trustees and ISB?

I want to reiterate the urgency for change. ISB has enjoyed decades of prominence since its inception, as a pioneer in educational innovation and global mindedness. Yet we cannot afford to stop reinventing ourselves, because our environment is evolving and our competitors are catching up. We need a forward-looking board that has the vision and resources to formulate and implement our strategy. My strong suit is finance and strategy, which could supplement the skillset of other board members in achieving the long term goal of ISB.

I also have a deep understanding of governance principals and strong bi-lingual communication skills. Having advised corporations, research institutions and government entities, I am fluent in the general practices at the board level. My personal journey from an engineering background, educated by Tsinghua University in China and Carnegie Mellon University in the US, to professional success in investment banking at a European powerhouse, could also be inspiration for our next generation. I believe my strong professional background will be an asset to the board and the school.

1.

Please provide a brief statement of interest as to why you want to run for the Board.

I would like to express my interest in becoming a board member with ISB Board of Trustees. As a father of two, both my daughter Anna, and my son David are currently attending ISB in grade 10 and grade 8 respectively. I have seen their academic and personal growth and improvement since their attendance here. I have much appreciated the times picking them up from school and listening to them gush about what a wonderful day they had, how much they loved their teachers, and how much they enjoyed learning at ISB. I want to be supportive and work to enhance this great experience with my children throughout their school years, and more importantly, I want to help to make sure that the same kind of inspiring experience continues to grow for other students and their families. I believe in the importance and value of ISB to the students’ education, and will endorse ISB’s mission without reservation. I understand that being a board member requires serious commitment, and I am willing to become an active board member, to commit sufficient amount of time, to be well prepared for all meetings, and to collaborate with other board members to ensure running an effective and efficient Board.

2.

In what ways have you supported ISB and/or other schools your children have attended?

In addition to being a current parent at ISB and the daily duties involved, I have a deep personal attachment to ISB. I was served as the interim CFO to ISB during 2000-2002, and witnessed the transition of ISB from an ambassador school to its current stage. I was deeply involved in the communication with the government, tax bureau, and education bureau, and the establishment of the financial system during the transition period of ISB. Therefore, I understand the vision, mission and core values of ISB, and I believe that this would be much valuable to me and the Board if I could serve as a board member in the future. My desire to serve as a contributing member on ISB’s Board has been a personal goal of mine for some time, and I have been actively participated in related events and activities over the past couple of years. For example, I was a former member of the Election Task Force in 2016 and oversaw the Board selection process for 2017, together with three board members, three academic staffs and two other parents. In September 2017, when there was a replacement board member vacancy became available, I also applied for the position. My passion to serve has grown over the years and I hope to continue volunteering my time and efforts to support the Board and ISB.

3.

How will your skills and prior experience (volunteer or paid) benefit the Board of Trustees and ISB?

I have extensive experience in Board administration and excellent leadership skills that would benefit the Board of Trustees and ISB. Over the past 20 years, I have been holding board member positions in several stock listed companies where I help the companies and board to develop long-term strategic plans and policies and guide their implementation. I am currently an executive director of Kingsoft Corporation, an independent non-executive director of Sany Heavy Equipment International Holdings Company, and an independent non-executive director and the chairman of the audit committee of E-Commodities Holdings. In addition, I am also an expert in financial management which would help to ensure the financial health of ISB. I was graduated from the University of Hong Kong with a Master of Science degree in Global Business Management and E-commerce. I am a professional accountant, and a fellow member of the Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants, and the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales. In the past, I have been holding core financial management positions at several companies, including PricewaterhouseCoopers, IRICO Group Electronics, China Huiyuan Juice, and NT Pharma Group. I am currently serving as the CFO for Kingsoft Corporation, a Hong Kong listed company. I have been taken this position since 2012, and responsible for running a financially effective and sustainable company. In addition, I understand that being a board member requires serious commitment, and I am willing to become an active board member and allocate sufficient amount of time to convey my passion here. I have already stepped down from a number of paid independent director positions and ready to fully commit my time and resources to the Board and ISB.

1.

Please provide a brief statement of interest as to why you want to run for the Board.

My family chose ISB because we want our children to learn in a forward-thinking environment that challenges students to reach their full potential. I have had the privilege of serving as a selected trustee of ISB this year and have seen first-hand the commitment, collaboration and strategic work of our board members. It is exciting and rewarding work that I hope to continue for years to come. Board governance and policy-making may seem far removed from the work of educating children, but I believe that sound governance and policies provide the framework that allows our teachers and administrators to do the work of fulfilling ISB’s mission. Our school has a 36-year history and tradition of excellence, but there is no room for complacency. As parents, we understand the importance of our children adopting a growth mindset and we must make sure that we hold ourselves to the same standard. I am proud to work alongside a board that applies this standard to its work to ensure that ISB continues to operate with a strong foundation for our children and for the future students of ISB.

2.

In what ways have you supported ISB and/or other schools your children have attended?

Now in my family’s second year at ISB, I get to watch my young dragons make the connection between what they learn in the classroom and the outside world. Our children are learning and feel good about their school, but I also want them to understand that school is even better when you participate as a member of the community. That is what I have found as a parent and what I hope they will find as they grow at ISB. Currently, I am serving through the end of the school year as a selected member of the Board of Trustees. I also volunteer by assisting with inventory and sales at the Dragon’s Den. My prior school volunteer experience includes everything from tactical roles like room parent and fundraiser marketing chair to more long-term strategic service on the School Advisory Council of Hillcrest Foreign Language Academy in Orlando, Florida.

3.

How will your skills and prior experience (volunteer or paid) benefit the Board of Trustees and ISB?

Having worked extensively with non-profit organizations in the past, I enjoy collaborating on strategic initiatives and oversight designed to make sure organizations have the capability to carry out their missions. My early career in the non-profit sector prompted me to obtain a master’s degree in public policy from UCLA. This experience sparked a passion in me for capacity building and quality policy-making at non-profit organizations. My most recent professional background includes managing government and community relations for the Orlando tourism board and implementing community relations and marketing initiatives for IKEA Orlando and IKEA USA’s retail expansion division. Using a mixture of public relations, marketing and policy analysis skills, I analyze issues and policies to identify results, potential unintended consequences and how policies may affect the various stakeholders. As someone who has served as a selected trustee for the 2017/2018 year, I understand the strategic nature of board service and the time commitment required to contribute actively to the Board. It is not easy work, but it is rewarding work and I am prepared to continue serving with passion and commitment.

Please provide a brief statement of interest as to why you want to run for the Board.

I am a parent of one daughter, Melinda, who is currently in Grade One. Three years ago when it came the time to choose the right school for her education, we put special emphasis on the school community and an enriched learning environment that would have an intimate and long-term impact in shaping our child’s upbringing. We chose ISB after months of careful evaluation.

Now having been part of the ISB community for almost three years, while recognizing areas for continuous enhancement, we continue to bond and deepen this relationship as time goes on. Being an active participant in Parent & Teacher Association (PTA) not only allows me to be a well-informed parent, but also directly and positively contributes to the community; managing PTA Store along with a team of volunteers serves as a day-to-day connection point with potentially every member in the ISB community. Becoming a member on the ISB Board of Trustees is the next step of this bonding which allows me, as a proud ISB parent, to be involved and contribute at a different level. Being passionate, accountable, open and honest are values I would carry forward.

2.

In what ways have you supported ISB and/or other schools your children have attended?

We came to ISB in the fall of 2015. Since then, I have been actively involved in a range of class-based and school-wide activities under different capacities.

  1. I am the homeroom parent for the past three consecutive years, facilitating communications between school and parents-in-class, and organizing various activities that help promote learning and social interactions within the community.
  2. I volunteered at school-wide events such as International Day, Spring Fair, Teacher Appreciation Lunch, etc. I was the co-chair for 2017 Spring Fare Game Team, managing all aspects of the game activities at the largest local community event. Now serving on the PTA Executive Committee provides a school-wide platform to get involved in PTA events, community services, policy setting, etc.
  3. PTA Store is a place where every member of the ISB community potentially meets. In June 2017, I took on the responsibility of managing the PTA store. Together with a group of volunteers, we manage the sourcing, pricing, stocking and staffing on a daily basis.

I strongly believe that, as a parent and an individual, offering my services and contributing proactively to a positive and loving community is part of my duty.

3.

How will your skills and prior experience (volunteer or paid) benefit the Board of Trustees and ISB?

I grew up in Beijing and subsequently went to the United States for undergraduate and post-graduate study. Professionally I have been working in global companies such as ThermoFisher and Agilent Technologies, both in the USA and Asia Pacific region for a number of years, heading up its strategic marketing, planning and field marketing operation. I am also familiar with start-up environment where I oversee the entire marketing operation, building infrastructure from stretch. Possessing long-term vision, thinking strategically, systematically planning and on-target execution are practices and skills I gained over years.

As an individual who was brought up under the traditional China education system, I experienced the rigorous academic training from elementary school up, like many of you. Meanwhile, I valued greatly the flexibility, intellectually stimulating, individual-tailored approach through a liberal arts education at Amherst College, followed by a Ph.D. study at Stanford University School of Medicine. A nice blend of the east and west education is what I hope many of our children can enjoy and benefit from. ISB, with its long history and reputation, is a school where our children’s education dream can be built upon. As a devoted parent, I am passionate about continuing building excellence.

1.

Please provide a brief statement of interest as to why you want to run for the Board.

I was born in China and left for the U.S. in my early teens, spending the next 27 years there before moving my architectural practice to China since 2010. Having experienced kindergarten and grade school in China, high school and college in the U.S. (leaping junior high), I know first hand the challenge and benefits of growing up bi-cultural and bilingual. I can relate to growing up in an environment both as a majority and as a minority.

I wished there was a school like ISB while I was growing up, with an active learning environment that is both open-minded and supportive, with endless opportunities and various interests. Our family feel so lucky that our son and daughter can grow up in such a place. I truly believe in ISB as a rare institution that will make our children citizens of the planet, not only understanding and adapting to this complex world, and also growing up with the heart and ability to make it a better place.

Having the chance to make a difference at such an unique school, is both rare and exciting. I wish to contribute in my own way, small as it might be.

2.

In what ways have you supported ISB and/or other schools your children have attended?

My daughter and I are both new to the school, having just finished one semester. My son is enrolling in the fall of 2018. Previously, both of them were at New Talent kindergarten. I arranged several art and design education tours for the entire kindergarten children (about 300 kids). They visited the Red Brick Museum in Shunyi and the 751 art and design district, with talks given by the chief curator of Beijing Design Week, Audi design staff and various artist.

The kindergarten at New Talent also went under a major renovation lasts year. I volunteered my time as a design consultant for the school, working with the principal and staff to make the best and most ecological renovation possible under the budget. Sometimes it required design input from me, other times I served more as an expert "set of eyes" on the school's behalf. Often I made recommendations to the type of material and construction method that is more suitable for a school environment.

It is extremely satisfying to see the results. It also helped to set an example for my own children, as in "You see, if you just try, you can make your place more beautiful".

3.

How will your skills and prior experience (volunteer or paid) benefit the Board of Trustees and ISB?

Through my career as an architect, I have always combined practice with teaching. (New York Institute of Technology, Columbia University, Seoul City University). I am currently a visiting professor at Tongji University, with a very international student body.

For 4 years I co-directed the joint studio between NYIT and Tongji University, with a 50-50 ratio of Chinese students and students from NYC. The last few years I also taught students from Europe and Asia. I not only had to teach in both English and Chinese, but also think and relate with a sensitivity to various cultures.

My own projects often are international and cultural in nature, having worked on several embassy projects, and designed the NYC's Lincoln Jazz Center in Shanghai, and the BlueNote Jazz Center in Beijing. We also completed several large university campus expansion projects.

I think this constant ability of inventing new realities and solving problems, is something that I can lean on to make my contribution to ISB. My work and teaching requires me to be open-minded and resourceful, passionate and positive, diligent and resilient. And I hope to bring the same qualities as a potential candidate for a board member at ISB.

1.

Please provide a brief statement of interest as to why you want to run for the Board.

I have been a proud ISB parent for almost eight years. We moved from Austin TX to Beijing in 2010. My son Brandon was a 4th grader then. My daughter Madison is a first grader now. Both of my kids absolutely love ISB. I appreciate the inspirational learning environment and the core values that ISB upholds, including integrity, respect, and service. It is time for me to give back to this wonderful community.

Today, ISB is at a cross road. Academics or whole child education, project-based learning or solid foundational skills, which one is more important? Can we balance these goals? I bring a perspective from higher education. As a university professor for the last 20 years, my understanding of the demand from colleges and future employees can help ISB make strategic decisions to become the best international school in Beijing. My curriculum design and implementation experience can also be valuable to ISB board. I hope I can contribute.

2.

In what ways have you supported ISB and/or other schools your children have attended?

I have been a homeroom parent for a few of Brandon’s classes and for all of Madison’s classes since she started at ISB three years ago. I have regularly volunteered at school events like international day and spring fair. Through these rewarding experiences, I have built a strong connection with the ISB community.

I also volunteer at the Sunday school for Capital Community Church. I started with overseeing activities in the small classes. Since last Fall, I have occasionally taught lectures for the big class for 1st-5th graders.

3.

How will your skills and prior experience (volunteer or paid) benefit the Board of Trustees and ISB?

I have spent all my life in schools. Education is my work and my passion. Since 2010, I have been a Full professor at Cheung Kong Graduate School of business, a member of the Faculty Executive Committee that oversees faculty governance, and the Academic Director for various programs. Prior to this, I was a Finance professor for ten years at the University of Texas at Austin and was tenured in 2008. I taught in both the undergraduate and graduate programs at the business school. From my work, I bring visions from college education, experiences in curriculum design and implementation, and understanding of faculty governance.

On the culture front, I was born and raised in China, and spent almost twenty years in the U.S.. I completed my undergraduate study in China (USTC) and graduate study in the U.S. (MIT Sloan School of Business). So I have full appreciation of both cultures.

Experiences and knowledge about China is increasingly valued by the international community. ISB’s long history in China and its solid U.S. education foundation give it a unique edge. With combined efforts from the school and parents, we can make ISB the best international school in the world!

Please provide a brief statement of interest as to why you want to run for the Board.

In middle school, I used to hate my history class, where my teacher would give us a list of historical events and asked us to remember the dates, locations the events took place, further, the meanings and significance of the events. History could not be more boring. Then there came a new history teacher, who was very knowledgeable. He started telling stories of world history. The stories were so interesting that I fell madly in love with history and as a result my brain automatically remembered the events I supposed to memorize. This was the first time I realized how a good teacher can motivate students, it was just like magic. I am a full time mom of two boys, one 8th grade and one 10th grade. Ever since they went to school, I have participated in every bit of their school life. I volunteered in every school event where I felt could contribute, hoping that would make a difference. I wanted my boys and their fellow students to be happy, healthy, fulfilling their potential and to grow into responsible, confident young men and women. I also want them to experience the magic that I had experienced –to be inspired and thus to be able to learn out of great interest and self motivation, further, developing their passions for lifelong learning. ISB was a dream school for us when my boys enrolled at their 4th and 5th grade respectively. I appreciate and cherish its vision and mission in creating an academically rigorous, balanced and engaging learning environment for each child. The world is fast changing driven by new technologies. The schools are evolving and changing as well. It is very different from when we joined 4 and half years ago. There are a lot of new challenges, also new choices as where the school is going. I am interested to get involved and work with school officials to embrace the challenges and opportunities for the benefit of our students as well as for the future of the school.

2.

In what ways have you supported ISB and/or other schools your children have attended?

This year is my 5th year in ISB. I have been 9thth grade HS reps respectively for two years. As HS rep, I served mainly as a communication bridge between school and HS moms in my grade by listening to the voices of parents, congregating their inputs, making corresponding suggestions or bringing the issues to the attentions of HS principal. I also coordinate PTA events, student organized events, and school events related to HS. I helped in organizing educational and experience sharing workshop to parents. I also volunteered in spring fair, international days and many other PTA organized events. I took the lead in Chinese showcase in last fall’s international day, which turned out to be the most visited showcase in the event. For more than 4 years I have volunteered in ES and MS respectively as homeroom parent, organizing homeroom party and other logistics to support school work. I also served as one of the team photographers for our swimming academy for more than two years.

3.

How will your skills and prior experience (volunteer or paid) benefit the Board of Trustees and ISB?

I had been a design engineer and senior technical manager for more than 10 years in Hughes – a network and telecommunication company, designed and led multimillion-gate chip design project for consumer products. As a chip designer, a small bug in design could cause million dollar damage as we would have to re-spin the design in foundry. Thus there has been strict design methodology in place to minimize mistakes. I was trained to design methodologies and follow the methodologies without cutting corners. I believe there is also a methodology on maintaining a good school in educational area. While I am a hands-on and technology savvy person, I am also proactive in my job, and a people’s person – so said by my supervisor in my previous job. I listen and talk to all kinds of people. I understand the importance of communication and coordination between PTA and school management team. As the technology is advancing, the world is changing very fast. I believe my engineering and management background would be helpful in the Board. I also have a lot of time and commitments to get involved and contribute to school as a full time mom now.

I want to run for the ISB board so I can be more involved in my children’s education and improve how my children and many other children can learn and thrive at ISB. I am the father of two girls. My 13-year-old is at the 7th grade. My 8-year-old is currently at another school for its bilingual program and we expect to transfer her to ISB as well. I have a long-term commitment to ISB.

While there are many different ways to be part of a child’s education, I feel it can be more constructive for me to be on the board of the very school to which my daughters attend. This will give me an opportunity to understand exactly how the class room teaching and school administration are conducted in practice, how these may impact students’ learning, and how I may guard the school’s value that is cherished by all ISB parents.

I had extensive legal experience, and I volunteered to be a board appointed member when there was a vacancy last year for a lawyer. I understand the member finally appointed will leave this year and the board may need another lawyer, so I am volunteering again.

2.

In what ways have you supported ISB and/or other schools your children have attended?

Before transferring to ISB two years ago, my 13-year-old was at Fang Cao Di International School. I was a member of the school PTA’s standing committee, and actually the only dad in this group, while the rest were all mums. I was also the only member of its bus committee. I did a significant amount of work on behalf of parents to help improve the school’s bus operations. For example, I negotiated and drafted agreements between the parents and a third-party bus operator and helped coordinate the bus schedules.

3.

How will your skills and prior experience (volunteer or paid) benefit the Board of Trustees and ISB?

I am currently the CFO of Cheetah Mobile Inc., an internet company listed on the New York Stock Exchange. Previously, I was a corporate lawyer at Skadden, a top Wall Street law firm, and I am still a member of the New York bar. Before that, I was an engineer at a Fortune 500 automotive company in the U.S. I received my Juris Doctor degree from Cornell Law School, M.S. from Penn State University, and M.S. and B.S. from Tsinghua University.

During my legal career, I led a number of companies’ IPOs in the United States and then advised those companies on legal compliance and corporate governance matters. I have designed many companies’ governance rules and drafted their corresponding constitutional documents. I am also one of the founders of Chinese Business Lawyer Association, a non-profit organization in the New York State.

I believe the fundamental principles of good governance is the same for both non-profit school and for-profit corporations. I hope my experience in law, finance and corporate governance can make meaningful contributions to the ISB Board of Trustees in its efforts to develop school policies, set future strategies and maintain financial stability.

1.

Please provide a brief statement of interest as to why you want to run for the Board.

Here are the reasons why I want to run for the Board:

  • My family and I are closely connected with the school as we have integrated school activities into our daily life. I was fortunate to be selected into the Board in September last year and had opportunities to see the Board in action. I participated in multiple board activities, discussions and committees. Serving on the Board provides me opportunity to enforce and refine the school vision, mission, purpose and philosophy.
  • I believe that the Board plays a crucial role in school strategic directions and long-term goals that have direct impact on every student in the School. Meanwhile, I realize that we should constantly think about continuous improvement and keep up with the evolving global and China environment. As part of the community with two children enrolled in ISB, I feel responsible to ensure the school provides the best education.
  • I believe that my academic background, my cultural immersion in both China and the US, my ability to think strategically, my business training, my communication skills and my habit for continuous improvement would help the Board define and achieve strategic goals best for the School and Students.

2.

In what ways have you supported ISB and/or other schools your children have attended?

I have supported ISB in following ways:

  • I have served as a selected Board member since September 2017. After spending time to complete orientation and training as a Board member, I participated in board meetings on school strategic topics. I have not only contributed to the discussions but also made suggestions on how the Board can improve its performance.
  • I have served as a member on Marketing Committee and Mission/Vision Committee. The committees consist of board members as well as school leaders, providing great opportunities to interact with them and gain their input.
  • I have also attended parent meetings and school activities. These activities provided me opportunities not only to make contribution to the School but also to interact with other parents and listen to their concerns.

3.

How will your skills and prior experience (volunteer or paid) benefit the Board of Trustees and ISB?

I believe that my following skills and experience would benefit the Board of Trustees and ISB:

  • Strategic thinking and consensus building: I have had various scientific and managerial roles through my career. With those roles and my business experience, I have been trained as a strategic and independent thinker as we often need to define various business and R&D strategies. I am skilled in navigating diverse and cross-functional teams to build consensus or seek the best solution from different perspectives.
  • Being scientific and analytical: I had education in both China and US: Tsinghua University for undergraduate, PhD from University of Wisconsin-Madison and MBA from University of Connecticut. I have lived and worked in both China and the US for long time. Deep immersion and understanding with Chinese and American cultures makes me appreciate and respect the diversity at ISB and work well in this diverse environment.
  • Communication and continuous improvement: I have good communication skills in both English and Chinese. I am a certified lean six sigma green belt for continuous improvement. I also have experience in serving as a Board member for a non-profit industrial association in China.

1.

Please provide a brief statement of interest as to why you want to run for the Board.

I love and respect ISB. It is a great organization that has served over a thousand families. Over the past few years, I’ve devoted as much time and energy as I was able to be of service to the school. Now, I want to continue to serve the school as a member of the board of trustees.

I’ve always been a social and dynamic person, while I was a student I was keenly involved in volunteer service. That hobby developed and carried over into my professional career, as I am very active in professional networking and industry groups.

I’ve also had the privilege to contribute and be challenged as the PTA president, and I am eager to further dedicate to the school while taking on new challenges as a member of the board of trustees.

2.

In what ways have you supported ISB and/or other schools your children have attended?

Whether it was getting involved with committees—board election committee, food committee, strategic planning committee, etc—or as head of the PTA for the past two years, I’ve been honored to have had the opportunity to get deeply involved in school activities.

During this period, some of which were challenging but all were fulfilling, I hope I contributed half as much as I learned and benefited from getting involved in the school community.

I took the responsibility and initiative to help out with a lot of different charity projects; one of the more prominent projects that I had helped organize was setting up a blood drive for one of our teachers at ISB. Blood donations didn't only come from ISB but were spread out from all different international families in Shun-Yi.

As the PTA president, I set up standard procedures and guidelines, yearly auditing, etc.

3.

How will your skills and prior experience (volunteer or paid) benefit the Board of Trustees and ISB?

My skills learned while volunteering in the PTA gave me a solid and in-depth overview of the perspectives of parents’ views from the international and Korean communities, to the local and returnees Chinese communities. I’m well-versed on parents’ hopes and fears are; therefore, I can serve as a valuable member of the board to serve as the conduit for these views.

As an award-winning entrepreneur, I’ve learned valuable lessons across a spectrum of business challenges whether it be visioning, operations, finance, communications, or working within teams which I can bring to the table as a board member

Lastly, as a native Chinese speaker, but also an acute linguist, I bring fluency in both English and Chinese languages that can help to bridge, understand, and communicate with the international communities both linguistically and culturally.

1.

Please provide a brief statement of interest as to why you want to run for the Board.

As an entrepreneur, active parent and member of non-profit parenting association, I have keen interest in the success of our students. I have my elder son enrolled in ISB in 2016 and second one enrolled the year after. As a parent with two young boys, I understand the significance and impact of educational policy in our school community. We are living in a changing world, a key issue for school boards is to create a long-term vision, mapping a course that provides the necessary opportunities students need to reach their full potential. I believe that a school board must be responsive and receptive to parents, staff, students and the community at large, encouraging an open dialog I have been working in finance industry for two decade. I have worked collaboratively with people of many different backgrounds and worldviews. I have brought people around the table to find common ground and take action together on solutions. I believe my unique combination of working experience and volunteer experience can make valuable contribution to the educational needs and goals of our community. I am dedicated to serve our school to grow even stronger and prepare our children for their future.

2.

In what ways have you supported ISB and/or other schools your children have attended?

I used to work as a PTA member for a local school before my two kids transferred to ISB. I worked for three years in that role, actively participated in PTA activities, organised many high profile events, including reading competition, museum visiting, charity sale etc, greatly bridged communication between parents and the school. As I am a committee member of a non-profit parenting association, I have got very good access to education and parenting resources. By taking advantage of this role, I have invited well-known parenting experts to give lectures for parents, and organized several forums to discuss education topics. As a volunteer guide for the National museum of China, I have introduced the museum staff to local school, to discuss corporation between local school and museum.

Although I am not a PTA member in ISB, I try to get involved in PTA and school activities as much as I can. For example, I was a homeroom parent last year, joined performance in PTA annual party, supported the charity run etc. When some parents voiced their concern on Chinese teaching, I stood up and arranged meeting with head of school for discussion.

3.

How will your skills and prior experience (volunteer or paid) benefit the Board of Trustees and ISB?

My working experience and volunteer experience can make immediate contribution. I used to run a subsidiary of a foreign bank in China, have very good sense of corporate governance and My working experience and volunteer experience can make immediate contribution to the Board of Trustees and ISB. I have been working in the finance industry for two decades, thanks to this experience ,I can work under pressure and have skills of fighting to meet target while balancing interest of related parties. I used to run a subsidiary of a foreign bank in China as CEO, have very good sense of corporate governance and high awareness of compliance and risk. There are two volunteer jobs I am taking right now, firstly, I am a committee member of a non-profit parenting organization-Parents-Children Association of China, which is by far the largest on-line parenting class of China. This role offers unique access to the parenting resources, where I get to know many experts in parenting area and have the channel to reach local kindergartens and schools; secondly, I work as a volunteer guide for the National Museum of China. I took this role three years ago as I am a big fan of Chinese traditional culture, through the language of traditional culture, I may help the Board of Trustees members to get better understanding of China.

Amnesty is a global human rights organization of more than 7 million people who take injustice seriously. They campaign for a world where human rights are enjoyed by all. You’ll be glad to know that we are opening an Amnesty International Club at ISB! From freeing a wrongfully imprisoned activist in Myanmar to implementing mandatory education in Ecuador, this club will help people in need by donating funds, raising awareness, signing petitions, and many other ways of active participation. If you’re even remotely interested in our cause, please come to a brief and non-commitment meeting in the library room (1226) on Tuesday, April 10th from 3:30-4:30.

We are very flexible with timing and we welcome everyone. If you can’t make it on April 10th but would like to learn more about Amnesty International, feel free to email Andrew Lu or Emily Lan.

How to Choose the Best Plant for Your Bathroom

Content originally published and Shared from http://perfectbath.com

Decorating your bathroom with plants won’t just make it look prettier, it will also help freshen up the air inside. Find out which plant to buy as you continue reading below:

Photo by Nick Karvounis on Unsplash

Lighting and Humidity
The bathroom’s moist environment is generally good for plants. But you should choose ones that can cope with the room’s wide temperature fluctuations — warm when someone is showering and cold when it’s left unused for several hours.

And since many bathrooms receive low levels of sunlight, plants should be able to cope with that too.

In fact, the most important thing is to pick plants that suit the level of natural light in your bathroom, Unsworth says. They should also suit the level of care you’re prepared to give them. Ferns, for example, require far more care to survive than succulents do.

Tropical plants are a good choice for bathrooms since they typically can deal with less direct sunlight than other plant species. They’re designed to grow in a rainforest, beneath a canopy of trees, which makes them ideal for indoor environments. Source: Houzz

Location
Bathrooms tend to be on the smaller side, so space for greenery is often limited. Large or tall plants don’t often work in bathrooms for this reason. A better option is to choose plants that can hang from the ceiling, or will trail down from a high shelf. The windowsill is another great location for bathroom plants, particularly as they can enjoy maximum light exposure here. Source: NaturalLivingIdeas

Plants for Low-Light Bathrooms:

  • Aloe Vera
  • Bamboo
  • Begonia
  • Boston Fern
  • Cast Iron Plant
  • Chinese Evergreen
  • Ficus Benjamina
  • Heart-Leafed Philodendron
  • Orchid
  • Peace Lily
  • Spider Plant
  • Dieffenbachia
  • Snake Plant

Plants for Bright and Sunny Bathrooms:

  • Asparagus Fern
  • Azalea
  • Gardenia
  • Kimberly Fern
